The IHA/NextGen Healthcare partnership is 13 years strong and includes continuous collaboration to help improve the product. In each of the last six years, we’ve presented at NextGen™ ONE UGM and entered the company’s Client Innovation Award competition each of the last three years.
We’re so excited to have won this award for the third straight year and are extremely proud of the incredibly talented team that we have assembled.
Winning these awards helps validate the innovative work that IHA is doing within its NextGen Healthcare environment. The fact the NextGen Healthcare Client Innovation Award is voted on by our peers who also use the NextGen Healthcare platform shows the broader NextGen Nation™ appreciates the value in the tools and templates that we have developed. Moreover, it underscores our commitment to provide the best tools possible to our providers and staff.
IHA has grown from around 160 providers when we first partnered with NextGen Healthcare to more than 450 providers today. During this growth we have appreciated how NextGen Healthcare has grown with us. The flexibility in their tools has allowed IHA to develop what we need to meet the needs of our many specialties.

We demonstrated custom EHR template design work around provider preferences that helps new IHA providers learn our NextGen® Ambulatory EHR system faster and easier.
The IHA NextGen Ambulatory EHR provider preference template functionality saves considerable time during new user set-up. Normally, it could take weeks, and even months, for new users to compile user lists such as “My Phrases” and “Med Favorites,” to name just two examples. It can take significant time for every new user to configure how he or she prefers their tool bar options and settings, medical component preferences; and related template favorites.
“Our New Provider Preference template is a way to quickly and easily incorporate a comprehensive set of standard preferences, phrases, and settings and apply them to many new users in only a few minutes,” explained Patrick Stevenson, Director, Information Technology, IHA. “When we acclimate new providers into the IHA group we save upwards of 250 hours of trainer and provider time in addition to the months it can take for each of the 100 residents we on-board each year to build their own set of My Phrases.”
Every practice and new EHR user in the IHA group must navigate these same basic configurations. We created our winning preference copying template to “fast forward” and simplify the process so that our providers are ready, faster, for the authentic engagement IHA patients expect during each visit. Our new preference copying template helps ensure our IHA gold standard of care settings are applied uniformly to all new IHA EHR users.
“The new tool makes it easy to get the HPI into the EHR,” said Neal Weinberg, MD, FAAP, Medical Director of Informatics, IHA. “One of our newest applications gets pediatric well-child history content into the EHR for providers with no work required on their part. The providers with the new content are ready for a better, higher quality encounter with young patients and their parents with no special effort to prepare the EHR for pediatric HPI input. We put it there effortlessly and seamlessly with our new tool. The HPI is then ready for immediate use which allows more direct face-time with the family and less typing.”
The new preference copying template enables consistent EHR system usability and supportability. From a patient care perspective, we’re able to help our newest providers become patient-encounter-ready faster and easier with less impact on productivity while they learn a new EHR system.
We’re gratified to have been recognized for a third year in the NextGen Healthcare Client Innovation Contest. And we’re happy to have shared our innovation with our peers at the NextGen ONE UGM 2015, because every NextGen Healthcare client can reclaim some precious time and effort with this innovation for new users of the NextGen® platform.
