- General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on the abdominal cavity which includes the stomach, colon, liver, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas. General surgeons are also trained to operate on the Alimentary tract (esophagus and related organs). They deal with diseases involving skin, breast, soft tissue and hernias, too. General surgeons are trained to diagnose conditions and recommend the most appropriate treatment in coordination with a patient’s primary care physician. It may or may not include a recommendation for surgery.
