Bariatric surgery helps people lose weight by surgically restricting the amount of food a person can eat or changing the way a person can absorb nutrients. This type of surgery is performed if other methods, such as diet and exercise, are not successful. Bariatric surgery is for people who are severely obese or have other obesity-related conditions like sleep apnea or diabetes. Bariatric surgeons have completed additional fellowship training in bariatric and minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures. Trinity Health IHA Medical Group bariatric surgeons see patients at the Michigan Bariatric Institute.
