Trinity Health IHA Medical Group's International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) provide expectant mothers with the expertise needed before, during and after the baby is born. It ensures you have the support and education needed to feel comfortable and confident in your decision to breastfeed. As an additional resource for expectant parents, the Trinity Health Ann Arbor Family Birth Center offers prenatal classes and tours. Lactation consultants are available by appointment at their office locations to provide mothers with optional one-on-one breastfeeding assistance. An IBCLC is a highly skilled health professional with advanced training to handle many types of breastfeeding issues including: • Basic breastfeeding education • Support and encouragement • Help to continue with breastfeeding after returning to work or school • Latching issues • Sore nipples or engorgement • Slow weight gain of an infant • Insufficient breast milk • Medical conditions such as prematurity, Down's Syndrome, cleft lip or palate • Breastfeeding multiples Breastfeeding is an important and rewarding experience for many mothers. At Trinity Health IHA Medical Group, our lactation consultants provide breastfeeding support consistent with the recommendations of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants. An IBCLC is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners Inc. under the direction of the U.S. National Commission for Certifying Agencies. We also offer same-day or next-day appointments with Trinity Health IHA Medical Group Breastfeeding Medicine Specialists. This practice provides comprehensive breastfeeding evaluation and treatment for mother and baby by breastfeeding medicine specialist Lisa A. Hammer, MD, IBCLC.
