Palliative Care

Palliative care is an approach to health care that focuses on symptom management and the relief of suffering. It is designed to help provide the highest quality of life possible for people with serious illnesses, or conditions that are life-limiting. Palliative care can be provided as an alternative to curative treatment, or in addition to treatment. In our care model, the patient is at the center of the team directing and controlling their choices. Palliative care helps patients and families understand the disease process and progression in order to set realistic goals and expectations. Family members can feel secure that their loved one is receiving the most comprehensive support for pain relief and quality of life through their treatment. Our Services Our team works with your own treatment team to provide care that relieves symptoms such as pain, nausea, or difficulty breathing. We may also provide support for a smooth transition from curative care to care that focuses more on comfort. Palliative care is different from hospice care, and offers services such as: • Medication adjustments for better pain control • Outpatient consultation for oncology patients • Supportive counseling for patients and loved ones • Coordination of care with treating physicians and other team members • Integration of psychological and spiritual aspects of health care with the physical aspects • Information on the course of illness, options for care, and other health concerns • Creating a comforting, soothing environment for the seriously ill patient • Companionship for patients who are dying and are alone Talk to your doctor or care team if you are interested in receiving palliative care.
